The Model 3 has seen many incremental improvements and production changes since the start of customer deliveries in 2017. In addition to the constant small incremental changes to individual components, there have been two step changes to the product which buyers should be aware of when making a purchasing decision. Below is a breakdown of these step changes and how they have impacted the product and the resale market.
Offered in several trim levels since the start of deliveries based on drive type and range, the Model 3 was Tesla’ best product to date when it was delivered in the second half of 2017. Tesla’s most important product since its founding, the Model 3 was intended to deliver on the promise of a more affordable electric car for the masses. Designed for much higher production volumes than the Model S and X, the Model 3 is an expression of design and manufacturing simplicity while packaging technological marvels in the powertrain and electronics.

Tesla introduced small changes to the Model 3 to match some of the features and styling from the Model Y. These included black trim around the exterior replacing the original chrome, an updated, more functional center console, and slightly improved range partly due to the introduction of the heat pump from the Model Y. Double-pane glass front windows improved cabin noise. Wheel options were stylistically updated, but it represented a smaller step change than had been seen on some of the updates to the Model S and X platforms in previous years.

The first significant update of the Model 3 since its launch in 2017, the “Highland” Model 3 features both aesthetic updates to the exterior and interior as well as technical updates. Visually, the exterior gets a new front and rear design with updated headlights, tail lights and bumper cover designs. Wheel options were updated for both the 18 and 19 inch versions. Double-pane glass windows were added to the rear windows further improving cabin noise. On the inside, the steering wheel takes cues from the steering wheel and drive selector concept from the Model S and X by removing all stalks from the steering column and replacing their functionality with steering wheel and touchscreen based controls. Also borrowing from the Model S and X were a rear passenger touch screen allowing for media and HVAC controls for the rear passengers. Ventilated seats in the front allow for heating and cooling. The drivetrain and battery did not receive an update during this refresh, but the updated exterior aerodynamics allow for a 5-7% range improvement. A performance model has not yet been announced.
